Bill Viola (born January 25, 1951) is a contemporary artist videos. He is considered a leading figure in the generation of artists whose artistic expression depends on the electronic, sound, image and technology in new media. His work has focused on the ideas of fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and aspects of consciousness.

Emergence was commissioned by the Getty Museum as part of Bill Viola: The Passions exhibition organized by the Museum in 2003. The video was inspired by a fresco from the 1400s by Masolino da Panicale, in which the dead Christ is shown at the moment of Resurrection.
