After I installed the new firmware 1.5 on my Pocket Cinema Camera, I shot some footage to check how this little camera can hold up the image in different scenarios. Coming from a Sony FS700 (without raw) I decided to shoot some scenes where I usually have to stress the 8-bit codec with artefacts, banding, etc. First scene (dark mood): Handeld with small Rig 19mm Sigma 2.

Tests, and our experiences with the new firmware update for the BMPCC.
Firmware version 1.5 which enables raw recording, was released two days ago, so we decided to make a review of the firmware.
In the review we talk about Raw vs. ProRes, black holes, white orbs, resolution, moire and problems we had during the review.

First footage I took on my BMPCC as soon as I updated the firmware. My first time working with raw footage, I didn't do much with the grade except boost some saturation. ISO 200 - BMPCC - Voigtlander 25mm - The 64gb 95mb/s sd card was the only card I could get the raw to work on. Two other 45mb/s cards, 64gb and 128gb would not let me record. Not surprised... We took the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera out for a spin late in the evening to record some RAW footage to show you.

The RAW footage was ingested into DaVinci Resolve Lite, with only a white balance correction applied. The footage was then output to ProRes 422 and pulled into Adobe Premiere CC. A couple of clips were graded with FilmConvert Pro and Colorista II at the very end (and are marked as such).

All of them bad.. 2200K Tungsten, 90watt CFL 4300 shining through a yellow shade, 70 Watt CFL 4000 shining up from floor lamp, Kitchen light on far back wall (yellow wall) 4800K. The scene is white balanced to around 3000k and it looks terrible with any camera NOT shooting RAW. My GH1 can make very nice images, but it cannot shoot this room and creat any useable footage. This is our first test of the raw recording option of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. We filmed some footage that is saved as CinemaDNG files (23,976 fps) thanks to the firmware update V1.5 that was just released a few hours before those sample videos were taken. We had serious problems importing the CinemaDNG files in Adobe Premiere Pro CC (7.1). This is a comparison video between the different ProRes compressions and the 4k Cinema DNG RAW from the Blackmagic Production Camera 4k. As these results are not shot in a controlled environment, only note the sharpness and detail of the side by side shots as the light may have changed naturally between shots.

Overall I am surprised how well the ProRes compressions held up between each other. I may chose ProRes 422 instead of HQ for now

I wanted to know, how much you can work with interior RAW footage in postproduction, without lights on scene, only "natural" room lighting. Camera was handhelded, so sorry for some shaky scenes :-)

Nothing scientific about this. I downloaded the Blackmagic Cinema Camera Utility 1.5 which contains the software for producing CinemaDNG RAW files on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and shot a few objects in my studio. All I can say is, we are going to have a lot of fun with this little camera. I am sure we will be seeing many more examples of grading the Raw files, but I wanted to shoot it, load it, grade it and render it right away so I knew I wasn't dreaming.

I had hoped to make a more comprehensive video but I was only able to sacrifice a couple hours of time on the day. Filmed in Cincinnati, Ohio. Shot in RAW with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (Sigma 18-35 1.8 with the Metabones Speedbooster). Graded in Lightroom. I had a promaster variable ND to help with light management and a hood loupe to see the LCD but filming was still incredibly difficult in the harsh mid-day sun.

A quick test flight during difficult light conditions with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera recording RAW. Footage was converted in Davinci to Apple Prores 444, edited in Premiere CC and output to .mp4. In Davinci I only did a REC709 conversion and some curves. No post sharpening applied. A DJI s800 EVO airframe with the motor rubber damper upgrade was used with a modified version of the Zenmuse NEX-7 Gimbal. More footage soon! Music: M83 - Outro
