The Smiths "How Soon Is Now?"

[1985] directed by Paula Greif and Richard Levine

Album: Hatful of Hollow / Year: 1984 / Written by Morrisey and Johnny Marr / Produced by John Porter
Lyrics:
I am the son and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son and the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

This song is owned by Rough Trade. From 1985. Non-album single.

A quick demo to show how you can get the type of sound in "How soon is now?". This is far from a perfect reproduction of the type of sound Marr created on the studio version, but for live use I think this comes close.

Johnny Marr performing the classic Smiths track "How Soon Is now"

A Night to remember. This was more than a gig. This was an event. As a warm up gig promoting Johnny Marr's debut 'solo' release "The Messenger" the venue was perfect. From back to front... all eyes were on Mr. Marr, never deviating, never waning. The man that has cool running through his veins performed an outstanding set that is sure to have people saying, "I'm glad I was there."

Sire Records chief Seymour Stein called it "the 'Stairway to Heaven' of the Eighties", while co-writer Johnny Marr described it as "possibly our most enduring record. It's most people's favourite, I think." Despite its prominent place in The Smiths' repertoire, however, it is

This song is a classic. There's nothing like the original, but it can live vicariously through others, no? Or at least one would hope. :)
